PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

Door Ajar Indicator Lamp and Chime
The door ajar indicator and chime feature is controlled by the generic electronic module (GEM). The driver and passenger door ajar switches (and liftgate-wagon only) are hard-wired to the GEM. If any door is sensed open, the instrument cluster will process the input, turn on the indicator and send a tone request signal to the GEM which sounds the chime.

Low Fuel Warning Chime
The instrument cluster sends the GEM a tone request which activates the tone when the ignition switch is in the RUN or START position and the fuel level is less than 15% of tank capacity.

Safety Belt Warning Chime
The seat belt tone request is transmitted over the CAN to the cluster from the restraint control module (RCM). The safety belt switches are hard-wired to the RCM. The instrument cluster sends a tone request to the GEM which sounds the chime.

Headlamp-On Warning Chime
The headlamp-on warning feature is controlled by the GEM. The headlamp and ignition switches are monitored by the GEM. If the headlamps are on and the ignition switch is OFF, the GEM will process the input and sound the chime.

Key-In-Ignition Warning Chime
The key-in-ignition warning feature is controlled by the GEM. The ignition switch and the driver door ajar switches are monitored by the GEM. If the key in ignition is sensed and the driver door is open, the GEM will process these inputs and sound the chime.

Air Bag Warning Chime
The instrument cluster sends the GEM a tone request which activates the tone when the ignition switch is in the RUN or START position, the air bag indicator is inoperable, the CAN air bag system status air bag system failed message is sent, or 15 seconds have elapsed since ignition switch position was in RUN or START and the air bag system status air bag system message is not received.
