TSB 06-8-805/01/06
BATTERY SLIDING IN BATTERY TRAY - CLUNK
NOISE ON TURNS
FORD:
2005 Focus
ISSUE
Some 2005 Focus vehicles, equipped with the smaller 52 amp/hour battery (500 CCA), may exhibit the battery sliding back and forth in the battery tray causing a clunking noise on turns.
ACTION
Refer to the following Service Procedure to secure the battery.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE
THIS PROCEDURE ONLY APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE SMALLER 52 AMP/HOUR (500 CCA) BATTERY.
1. Remove the battery cover and check for the battery sliding back and forth in the battery tray. If this condition is present continue with the TSB. If the condition is not present refer to Workshop Manual (WSM) for normal diagnostics.
2. If equipped, remove the battery cover.
3. Remove the battery hold-down clamp.
4. Remove approximately half of the plastic material 1/16 to 3/32" (1.5-2 mm) from each rib on the underside of the battery hold down clamp using a bench grinder or other suitable tool (Figure 1).
NOTE
MAKE SURE THE BATTERY IS POSITIONED AS FAR TO THE LEFT OF THE BATTERY TRAY (TO THE RIGHT WHEN VIEWING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE) AS POSSIBLE. THIS ALLOWS THE BATTERY TRAY TO PROVIDE THE MAXIMUM SUPPORT/CLAMPING TO THE BATTERY AND ALSO POSITIONS THE BATTERY AWAY FROM THE ENGINE.
5. Reinstall the battery hold down clamp. Tighten to 9 lb-ft (12 N.m)
6. Verify that the battery is no longer sliding back and forth in the battery tray.
7. If equipped, reinstall the battery cover.
