ISSUE
Some 2005 Focus 4 dr. Sedan vehicles may exhibit the luggage compartment lid re-latching before the lid can be opened, when attempting to open using the remote transmitter (key fob) or the luggage compartment lid release switch inside the vehicle. This may be caused by the latch not activating when commanded, misalignment of the latch striker or incorrectly adjusted rubber stop bumpers on the luggage compartment lid.
ACTION
Determine the cause of the condition and repair as necessary. Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verify that the luggage compartment lid latch is operating when commanded by the remote transmitter and the luggage compartment lid release switch.
NOTE
A DISTINCT CLICKING NOISE WILL BE HEARD INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE IF THE LATCH IS OPERATING WHEN COMMANDED.
a. If the latch is not operating when commanded, refer to Workshop Manual, Section 501-14 for diagnosis.
b. If the latch is operating when commanded but is re-latching before the luggage compartment lid can be opened, proceed to Step 2.
2. Unlatch the luggage compartment lid using the key by rotating the key clockwise and holding the key in the unlatched position.
3. Open and close the luggage compartment lid while holding the key in the unlatched position.
a. If the luggage compartment lid latch is rubbing against the striker, adjust the striker by loosening the two (2) striker attachment screws and moving the striker as necessary.
b. If the luggage compartment lid latch and striker are operating correctly, proceed to Step 4.
NOTE
A SLIGHT DRAG MAY BE FELT BETWEEN THE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT LID AND THE WEATHER-STRIP. THIS IS NORMAL AND NO SERVICE IS NECESSARY.
4. Turn the two (2) luggage compartment lid rubber stop bumpers, located on the bottom of the luggage compartment lid, in (clockwise) until they stop.
5. Turn the two (2) luggage compartment lid rubber stop bumpers out (counterclockwise) four (4) complete turns.
6. Verify that the closing and latching efforts of the luggage compartment lid are not excessive.
NOTE
THE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT LID RUBBER STOP BUMPERS CAN BE TURNED IN CLOCKWISE AS NEEDED FOR MINOR ADJUSTMENT IF THE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT LID CLOSING AND/OR LATCHING EFFORTS ARE EXCESSIVE AFTER PERFORMING THE ABOVE PROCEDURE.
