M/T - Difficult or Unable to Shift Into 5th Gear

DIFFICULT OR UNABLE TO SHIFT INTO 5TH GEAR
FORD:
2002-2005 Focus
ISSUE
Some 2002-2005 Focus vehicles equipped with MTX-75 manual transaxle and 2.0L Zetec, 2.0L/2.3L Duratec PZEV engine, may exhibit difficulty shifting into 5th gear or unable to shift into 5th gear. This may be caused by an internal roll pin shifting out of position inside of the gear selector mechanism located on the transaxle.
ACTION
Verify proper gearshift cable adjustment and correct as necessary. Refer to Workshop Manual Section 308-00 for gearshift cable adjustment procedures. If gearshift cables are properly adjusted and the condition is still present, replace the gear selector mechanism located on the transaxle. Refer to the following the Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the battery. For additional information refer to Workshop Manual, Section 414-01.
NOTE
REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL, SECTION 308-03B (MTX-75 MANUAL TRANSAXLE REMOVAL) FOR STEPS 2-9.
2. Remove the battery tray.
3. Remove the air cleaner housing.
4. Remove the intake tube.
5. Support the engine/transaxle using the appropriate special service tools.
6. Remove the rear engine mount.
7. Remove the rear engine mount bracket.
8. Disconnect the reverse lamp electrical connector.
9. Disconnect the gearshift cables from the transaxle.
NOTE
REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL, SECTION 308-03B (MTX-75 MANUAL TRANSAXLE DISASSEMBLY) FOR STEPS 10 AND 11.
10. Position the gear selector mechanism, located on the transaxle, in the neutral position.
11. Remove the six (6) bolts and the gear selector mechanism from the transaxle.
NOTE
MAKE SURE TRANSAXLE STAYS IN NEUTRAL AND REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL, SECTION 308-03B (MTX-75 MANUAL TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY) FOR STEP 12.
12. Install new gear selector mechanism.
NOTE
REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL, SECTION 308-03B (MTX-75 MANUAL TRANSAXLE INSTALLATION) FOR STEPS 13-20.
13. Install the rear engine mount bracket.
14. Install the rear engine mount.
15. Remove the special service tools that were installed to support the engine/transmission.
16. Connect the reverse lamp switch electrical connector.
17. Attach the gearshift cables to the transaxle.
18. Install the intake tube.
19. Install the air cleaner housing.
20. Install the battery tray.
21. Install the battery. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 414-01 for additional information.
22. Adjust the gearshift cables. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 308-00.
