Removal

Transmission-2.0L Duratec








Special Tool(s)

Removal





1. Remove the battery tray.





2. Remove the air cleaner resonator.
1. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose.
2. Disconnect the air cleaner outlet hose.
3. Remove the bolts and pull out the air cleaner resonator.





3. Loosen the LH strut and spring assembly top mount nuts by four turns.





4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
1. Transmission Range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
2. Transaxle solenoid electrical connector.





5. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.





6. Remove the upper center converter housing bolts.





7. Using the special tool, secure the engine.





8. Remove the fluid filler tube and shift cable bracket bolts.





9. Remove the nut and bracket from the starter stud.





10. Remove the starter nuts, then disconnect the wiring from the starter.





11. NOTE: Unplug the oil sending unit to remove the starter from its location.

Remove the three starter bolts and starter.





12. Remove the starter isolator.





13. Remove the engine right-hand support insulator.
1. Remove the insulator bolt and nut.
2. Remove the insulator bolt.





14. Disconnect the LH stabilizer bar at the strut.





15. Remove the LH tie-rod end nut.





16. Remove the RH tie-rod end nut.





17. Using the special tool, disconnect both of the tie-rods from the knuckles.





18. Disconnect both of the lower control arms from the knuckles.





19. Remove the mounting bracket nuts, then remove the bracket from the halfshaft intermediate bearing.





20. Remove the RH front drive halfshaft. Position it aside and support the halfshaft with mechanics wire.





21. CAUTION: Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.

Remove the LH front drive halfshaft from the transmission.
1. Using the special tool, remove the halfshaft from the transaxle.
2. Install a plug into the transmission opening.





22. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.





23. Unbolt the shift cable clip.





24. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler lines from the transmission.
1. Slide the connector fitting into the cooler line.
2. Press the yellow release button.
3. Pull the connector fitting from the cooler line.





25. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever.





26. CAUTION: Rotate the engine in a clockwise direction only or engine damage will occur.

NOTE: Mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.

Remove the plastic shield. Rotate the crankshaft to access the converter nuts, then remove the four nuts.





27. Remove the engine rear mount nuts and remove the rear mount.

28. Using the engine support bar, lower the engine and transmission assembly slightly.





29. Remove the engine rear mount bracket nuts and remove the bracket.

30. Remove the fluid filler tube.

^ Remove the bolt at the base and pull out the tube and position it aside.

31. Secure the transmission with a high-lift jack using a safety strap.





32. NOTE the location of the different length bolts for installation.

Remove the three LH converter housing bolts.





33. Remove the three RH converter housing bolts.

34. Separate the transmission from the engine and lower the transmission.





35. Install the special tool to prevent torque converter damage.
