Steering/Frame - Vehicle Pulling or Drifting
TSB 07-4-203/05/07
PULL/DRIFT
FORD:
2000-2007 Focus
ISSUE
Some 2000-2007 Focus vehicles may exhibit a light drift/pull concern due to front subframe misalignment. This procedure is being published to supplement the Workshop Manual, Sections 204-00 & 502-00, on Suspension System - General Information and Uni-Body, Subframe and Mounting System, and explain how it effects vehicle wheel alignment angles. Previous vehicle repairs that required front subframe removal may require the subframe to be realigned to correct light vehicle drift/pull conditions.
ACTION
Align front subframe to correct misalignment, optimize camber and caster alignment angles.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE
NORMAL VEHICLE ALIGNMENT CHECKS MUST BE PERFORMED PRIOR TO PERFORMING THIS PROCEDURE.
1. After vehicle alignment checks have determined that the vehicle subframe is misaligned, determine which direction the subframe may need to be shifted to optimize camber and caster angles. (Figure 1)
NOTE
DIAGRAMS ARE BEING VIEWED FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE.
FIGURE KEY:
^ Shifting the subframe rearwards will - decrease caster
^ Shifting the subframe forward will - increase caster
^ Shifting the subframe towards driver side will - change camber on pass side (+) and on drivers side (-)
^ Shifting the subframe towards passenger side will - change camber on drivers side (+) and on pass side (-)
2. Loosen the six (6) subframe attaching bolts, approximately two to three turns (720 - 1080 degrees of rotation). (Figure 2)
3. Shift the subframe in the direction needed to align it properly with the vehicles' body structure.
4. Torque the two (2) rearward outboard bolts (M14) first to 129 lb-ft +/- 12 lb-ft (175 N.m +/- 17 N.m).
5. Torque the two (2) forward attaching bolts (M12) to 76 lb-ft +/- 12 lb-ft (103 N.m +/- 15 N.m).
6. Torque the two (2) rearward inboard bolts (M14) to 129 lb-ft +/- 12 lb-ft (175 N.m +/- 17 N.m).
NOTE
TIGHTENING THE ATTACHMENT BOLTS IN THIS SEQUENCE WILL MINIMIZE SUB FRAME SHIFTING DURING THE PROCEDURE.
NOTE
VEHICLE WHEEL ALIGNMENT AND TOE CHECK/ADJUSTMENT IS REQUIRED AFTER THIS PROCEDURE.
