Seats: Description and Operation
SEATSFront Seats
The front bucket seats have the following features:
- Manual horizontal adjustment
- Manual recliner
- Manual vertical adjustment (driver seat only)
- Heated cushion and backrest (optional)
- Occupant classification sensor (OCS) (passenger seat only)
- Seat side air bags (optional)
- Passenger seat belt tension sensor (BTS) (passenger seat only)
The 3-door model front passenger seat has a tip/slide feature for easy entry to the second row seating. Refer to the owner's literature for function of the front seats.
Manual Horizontal Adjustment
The manual adjustment is attained by lifting on the release handle at the front outboard side of the seat and adjusting forward or rearward to the desired position.
Manual Recline
The manual recline adjustment is attained by lifting the release lever mounted on the outboard side of the seat cushion side shield and adjusting to the desired position.
Vertical Adjustment
Manual vertical adjustment is attained by turning the crank handle knob, mounted under the front inboard side of the driver seat cushion to the desired position.
Heated Seats
CAUTION: Remove the paper strips covering the adhesive before adhering the heated seat element to the foam pad. Otherwise damage to the seat can occur.
This system allows the electrical heating of the front seats on occupant demand. The heated seat system on this vehicle does not have a heated seat module. The heated seat system will only operate with the ignition switch in the RUN position.
The components of the system are:
- the heated seat elements located in the seat cushion and backrest.
- the heated seat switches, located on the center console.
- a bi-metallic thermostat that is part of the cushion heated seat element.
NOTE: A new heated seat element can be attached to a foam pad where an old heated seat element was removed. A used heated seat element should not be reattached to any foam pad.
The cushion or backrest heated seat element can be peeled off of a foam pad and a new one adhered in its place. A heated seat element cannot be reused, as the adhesive will no longer hold the position on the foam pad causing shifting or bunching of the element.
Occupant Classification Sensor (OCS)
CAUTION:
- If installing only the front passenger seat cushion trim cover, the seat occupant classification sensor (OCS) must be rezeroed.
- Make sure the seat is completely assembled before rezeroing.
- The following precautions must be taken before rezeroing of the OCS system.
- Make sure the OCS system components are connected and no faults are present.
- Make sure the OCS system is not a temperature below 0°C (32°F) or above 45°C (113°F) when initiating the rezeroing process. If the vehicle has been exposed to extreme cold or hot temperatures, the vehicle must be exposed and kept at a temperature within the limits, 0°C to 45°C (32°F to 113°F) for a minimum of 30 minutes.
- Make sure nothing is present on the passenger seat before rezeroing and nothing is placed on the seat during the rezeroing process.
- Make sure a minimum 5-second time period has passed after cycling the ignition switch ON before the rezeroing process.
NOTE:
- It is necessary to rezero the OCS system when a front passenger seat cushion is disassembled, a new trim cover installed, or an OCS service kit is installed. A diagnostic tool is used to trigger the active command to carry out rezeroing of the OCS system.
- If the first attempt to rezero the OCS system is unsuccessful, a second attempt must be made.
The seat occupant classification sensor system is found only on the front passenger seat. The OCS system components (seat cushion pan, seat cushion foam pad, bladder with pressure sensor and electronic control unit) are calibrated to each other and are serviced as an assembly. OCS system components are not to be installed separately. If installing a new OCS system, OCS system component or seat cushion foam pad, a new seat cushion assembly with OCS system service kit (seat cushion pan, seat cushion foam pad, wire harness, bladder with pressure sensor and electronic control unit) must be installed as an assembly.
Seat Side Air Bag
Driver and passenger side air bags are attached to the seat backrest frame. For diagnostic information, refer to Air Bag systems.
Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with seat side air bags cannot be repaired. The front seat backrest trim covers are to be installed new. Cleaning is permissible.
If a seat side air bag deployment took place, a new seat backrest foam pad, trim cover and seat side air bag module must be installed. Install a new seat backrest frame, if necessary.
If the seat side air bag has been deployed, refer to Air Bag Disposal - Deployed in Air Bag Systems.
Belt Tension Sensor (BTS)
The belt tension sensor is part of the safety belt buckle on the front passenger seat only. It is part of the supplemental restraint system (SRS). It connects electrically to the passenger seat wire harness. For diagnostic information, refer to Air Bag Systems. For specific removal and installation information, refer to Seat Belt Systems.
Rear Seats
The rear seats are of the split 60/40 design, with the 60 percent rear seat backrest incorporating the safety belt retractor on 3-door, 5-door and wagon vehicles. All rear seats fold flat to form a load floor.
