Body - Water Leaks Onto Front/Rear Floor Area

WATER LEAKS AT FRONT AND REAR FLOOR AREA
OR COUPE REAR STORAGE AREA - SERVICE TIPS

FORD:
2006-2007 Focus

ISSUE
Some 2006-2007 Focus vehicles may exhibit a difficult to diagnose or difficult to repair water leak in the front and rear floor area or the rear storage/spare tire well area. This may be caused by sealer skips in and around the windshield, cowl area or rear storage compartment area.

ACTION

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Water Leak Testing Procedure - Front Floor Area Leaks





1. Using a high pressure water hose or a pressure washer, run water onto the windshield being sure to direct water over the roof ditch moldings, and down onto the cowl. (Figure 1)





2. Open the hood and direct water (from the side of the vehicle) into the base of the A-pillar in the hood hinge area. (Figure 2)





3. Remove right front inner splash shield and direct water into the back of the right front wheel well area. (Figure 3) Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-02.

4. Proceed to Water Leak Inspection/Repair Procedure.

Water leak Inspection/Repair Procedure

Inspect the following areas for visible signs of leaks and follow the appropriate repair steps.

Water is Visible in the Right or Left Kick Panel/A-Post Area

NOTE
IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE HOOD, HOOD HINGES AND/OR COWL PANEL TRIM TO FULLY ACCESS AND REPAIR SOME LEAK SOURCES. FOLLOW WSM, SECTION 501-02 IF HOOD, HOOD HINGES AND/OR COWL PANEL TRIM REMOVAL IS NECESSARY.





1. Inspect for sealer skip behind roof ditch moldings. Fold the ditch molding back and inspect for a pinhole in the body seal just above the windshield. Reseal as necessary with Motorcraft Roof Ditch Sealer. (Figure 4)

2. Inspect for skip in windshield urethane. Reseal as necessary.





3. Inspect for sealer skip in A-post to cowl joint. (Figure 5) Reseal as necessary by following steps a - c.

NOTE
USE OF A SMALL FLEXIBLE MIRROR AND LIGHTING MAY BE REQUIRED FOR INSPECTION.

a. Remove Cowl Panel Grill as outlined in WSM, Section 501-02.

b. Remove hood and hinges from body.





c. Inspect for sealer skip in A-post to cowl joint starting from windshield edge. (Figure 6) Reseal area as necessary.

Water Leak Testing/Repair Procedure - 3 dr and 5 dr Rear Storage Area Or Spare Tire Well Area Leaks

1. Remove rear storage area lining material and trim panels as necessary to access. Refer to WSM, Section 501-05.

2. Using a high pressure water hose or a pressure washer, spray water onto the underside of the rear of the vehicle in and around the rear storage area and spare tire well area being sure to direct water in the suspect areas.








3. Inspect areas indicated (Figures 7 and 8) for sealer skips and reseal as necessary.
