Pinpoint Test F: Poor Reception/Poor Sound Quality/No Sound - Satellite Audio

Refer to Wiring Diagrams Set 130, Audio System for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

Digital signals are received by the satellite radio antenna and sent to the Audio Control Module (ACM) through the satellite radio antenna cable.

A short to ground in the satellite radio antenna typically has no effect on the antenna signal; however, an open in the antenna circuit results in no sound from the satellite radio system. A short to voltage in the antenna circuit can have varying effects on the system.

- DTC B1031 (SDARS Satellite Antenna Open) - sets when an open or high resistance is detected in the satellite antenna circuit. This DTC can be either continuous or on-demand.
- DTC B1032 (SDARS Satellite Antenna Short) - sets when a short to ground or short to voltage is detected in the satellite antenna circuit. This DTC can be either continuous or on-demand.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Obstructions to the line of sight
- No channel found in the selected category
- Satellite radio antenna cable
- Satellite radio antenna
- ACM

PINPOINT TEST F: POOR RECEPTION/NO SOUND - SATELLITE AUDIO

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

-------------------------------------------------
F1 CHECK THE CATEGORY FILTER SETTING

- Turn the category filter function off. For additional information, refer to the Owner's Literature.
- Scan for a good channel.
- Does the satellite radio system find a good channel with normal reception?

Yes
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern was a result of no channel being found in the selected category. This is normal operation.

No
GO to F2.

-------------------------------------------------
F2 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE SATELLITE AUDIO

- Drive the vehicle to an open location, free of obstacles.
- Operate the audio system in satellite audio mode.
- Is the reception OK?

Yes
The system is OK at this time. ADVISE the customer that the satellite signal can be affected by obstructions to the satellite radio antenna line of sight.

No
GO to F3.

-------------------------------------------------
F3 CHECK FOR A SATELLITE ANTENNA FAULT MESSAGE

- Operate the audio system in satellite audio mode and observe the Front Display Interface Module (FDIM) display.
- Does the FDIM display indicate a satellite radio antenna fault?

Yes
GO to F4.

No
Go To Pinpoint Test J. Pinpoint Test J: The Satellite Audio Is Inoperative/Does Not Operate Correctly

-------------------------------------------------
F4 CHECK CIRCUIT VME43 (BK) FOR VOLTAGE

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Antenna C400.
- Operate the audio system in satellite audio mode.
- Measure the voltage between the antenna C400-2, circuit VME43 (BK), harness side and ground.

- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes
GO to F6.

No
GO to F5.

-------------------------------------------------
F5 CHECK CIRCUIT VME43 (BK) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: ACM C240a.
- Measure the resistance between the ACM C240a-5, circuit VME43 (BK), harness side and the antenna C400-2, circuit VME43 (BK); and between the ACM C240a-5, circuit VME43 (BK), harness side and ground.

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the ACM and the antenna, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the ACM and ground?

Yes
GO to F6.

No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
F6 CHECK THE SATELLITE RADIO ANTENNA CABLE

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Satellite Radio Antenna Connection (At ACM).
- Disconnect: Satellite Radio Antenna Connection (At Satellite Radio Antenna).
- Measure the resistance of the satellite radio antenna cable core between the ACM and the satellite radio antenna.
- Measure the resistance of the satellite radio antenna cable between the core and the shield of the antenna cable.
- Is the resistance less than 1 ohm between the ACM and the satellite radio antenna, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the satellite radio antenna cable core and shield?

Yes
GO to F7.

No
INSTALL a new satellite radio antenna cable. REFER to Antenna Cable - Satellite Radio Antenna Cable - Satellite Radio. CLEAR any DTCs present. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
F7 ISOLATE THE SATELLITE RADIO ANTENNA

- Install a new satellite radio antenna. Refer to Antenna Service and Repair.
- Operate the audio system in satellite audio mode.
- Is the reception OK?

Yes
The concern was caused by an inoperative satellite radio antenna. The system is operating correctly at this time. CLEAR any DTCs present. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to F8.

-------------------------------------------------
F8 CHECK FOR CORRECT ACM OPERATION

- Disconnect all the ACM connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the ACM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new ACM. REFER to Audio Control Module (ACM) Audio Control Module (ACM). TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
