Cruise Control: Description and Operation

Speed Control

The speed control system consists of the following components:

- Clutch pedal speed control deactivator switch (manual transaxle only)
- Electronically-controlled throttle body
- Speed control deactivator switch (part of the stoplamp switch)
- Speed control indicator
- Speed control switch
- Stoplamp switch
- PCM

When the speed control system is activated, a selected vehicle speed above 40 km/h (25 mph) to the maximum limited vehicle speed can be maintained without pressing the accelerator pedal. The speed control system is controlled by the steering wheel mounted switches (ON, OFF, SET+, SET-, and RESUME), clutch pedal (manual transaxle) and the brake pedal. The steering wheel mounted switches are hardwired to the PCM.

For manual transaxle vehicles, it is normal for the engine rpm to increase slightly and then drop off slowly when the clutch pedal is applied during operation.

During normal driving, the vehicle speed may vary slightly from the set speed due to road conditions. The vehicle speed may vary or fluctuate when driving up and down a steep hill. If the vehicle speed decreases more than 16 km/h (10 mph) below the set speed, the speed control disengages.
