DIFFICULT TO REMOVE IGNITION KEY FROM
IGNITION CYLINDER - BUILT BEFORE 5/31/2009

FORD:
2009 Focus

ISSUE
Some 2009 Focus vehicles built before 5/31/2009 and equipped with an automatic transmission may exhibit a difficult to remove ignition key from the ignition cylinder. The concern may or may not be intermittent. Shifter lever or ignition lock cylinder replacement should not be necessary to perform this repair.

ACTION
Follow the service procedure to ensure the park detent switch if fully seated.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. If the concern is verified, reference Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 211-05 Steering Column Switches Diagnosis and Testing.

a. If diagnostics do not lead to transmission shifter lever replacement, do not continue with this procedure.

b. If diagnostics do lead to shifter lever replacement, inspect the park detent switch on the lever before component replacement. Proceed to Step 2.

2. Remove the center floor console to gain access to park detent switch. Reference WSM, Section 307-05 for additional information.

3. Verify the park detent switch and retainer tabs are not damaged or broken.

a. If no damage is present, continue to Step 4.

b. If damage is present, replace shifter lever.





4. Apply moderate pressure to the side of the park detent switch to ensure switch is fully seated onto both locking tabs. (Figure 1)

NOTE
IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO DEPRESS THE BUTTON ON THE SHIFTER LEVER BEFORE APPLYING PRESSURE TO PARK DETENT SWITCH IN ORDER TO FULLY SEAT THE SWITCH.

5. If park detent switch is seated properly and not damaged, replace the shifter lever.
