Anti-Theft - Perimeter
Anti-Theft
NOTE: The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).
The perimeter anti-theft system consists of the following:
- Door ajar switches (part of the door latches)
- Hood switch (left front of the engine compartment)
- Horn
- Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter
- Turn signal lamps
- SJB (located under the instrument panel on the driver side)
The perimeter anti-theft feature is controlled by the SJB which monitors all of the inputs (all doors, hood and the luggage compartment lid must be closed and the key must be out of the ignition switch) and arms the perimeter alarm 20 seconds after all of the inputs are closed. From the time each individual input is closed, to the time the perimeter alarm is armed for that particular input, is the "pre-arm phase". The pre-arm phase is separate for each individual input. If the door lock control switch was pressed to LOCK with the accompanying door open, the input that is closed (hood) immediately begin its pre-arm phase. After the door that was open is closed, the doors begin their pre-arm phase. This causes the hood to be armed a few seconds before the doors. The perimeter alarm arms in stages, in relation to which input was closed first after the arming command was given.
In the event of an unauthorized entry, the alarm is activated by the SJB. When the alarm is activated, the SJB intermittently grounds the horn relay, causing the horn to sound in regular intervals, and intermittently powers the turn signals, causing the turn signal lamps to flash in regular intervals. The alarm continues to operate for 2 minutes and 45 seconds, unless the battery dies or the alarm is deactivated or disarmed.
An unauthorized entry is identified by the SJB when a passenger door, hood or the luggage compartment lid is detected by the SJB as having been opened and no electronic unlock function (RKE transmitter unlock button being pressed) was received. If this occurs, the SJB activates the perimeter alarm immediately. For the driver door, the Instrument Cluster (IC) issues a chime for 12 seconds if the SJB detects the driver door as having been opened and no electronic unlock function (RKE transmitter unlock button being pressed) was received and the message center displays TO STOP ALARM START VEHICLE. If a valid, programmed PATS key does not turn the ignition to the on position within 12 seconds, the IC sends a message to the SJB over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) to activate the perimeter alarm.
An authorized entry is identified by the SJB as any of the ajar switches (any door, hood or luggage compartment lid) being opened after an electronic unlock command (from a programmed RKE transmitter) has been detected by the SJB.
With each alarm event, the input that triggered the alarm is recorded as a PID in the SJB. Up to 4 events can be recorded and used to determine what activated the alarm. If there has been more than 4 events, only the most recent 4 events is able to be reviewed.
The alarm can be armed by using 1 of 2 commands:
- Pressing the LOCK button on the RKE transmitter
- Pressing the door lock control switch to LOCK with the accompanying door open, then closed
The perimeter alarm can be disarmed only by:
- pressing the UNLOCK button on the RKE transmitter.
- using a valid programmed key to turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
The door lock control switches cannot disarm the perimeter alarm.
The perimeter alarm can be deactivated (not disarmed), by pressing the PANIC button on the RKE transmitter. This action does not disarm the alarm, but stops the alarm from activation (horn sounding and turn signals flashing). The perimeter alarm continues to be armed.
