Removal

NOTICE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.

1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Fuel System - General Information Service and Repair.

2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery, Mounting and Cables Service and Repair.

3. If equipped, remove the 4 nuts and the strut tower cross brace.

4. NOTE: The engine appearance cover rubber grommets may remain on the cover. If so, remove the grommets from the cover and install them on the intake manifold before installing the cover.

Remove the engine appearance cover.

5. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) and ACL outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to Intake Air Distribution and Filtering Diagrams.

6. Detach the sound enhancement pipe from the inner fender and position aside.

7. Remove the LH ignition coils. For additional information, refer to Engine Ignition - 5.0L (4V) Service and Repair.

8. Disconnect the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge valve tube. For additional information, refer to the quick connect coupling procedure in Fuel System - General Information Fuel System.

9. Detach the EVAP canister purge valve tube retaining clips from the LH valve cover and the inner fender.

10. Disconnect the 2 LH Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) variable force solenoid electrical connectors.

11. Detach the 10 wiring harness retainers.

12. Remove the oil level indicator.

13. Disconnect the fuel supply tube. For additional information, refer to the quick connect procedure in Fuel System - General Information Quick Connect Coupling.

14. Detach the fuel supply tube retaining clip from the LH valve cover.

15. NOTICE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.

Loosen the 14 bolts and remove the LH valve cover and gasket.

- Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.

- Discard the valve cover gasket. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.

16. If necessary, depress the 4 tabs and remove the oil level indicator tube.

17. Inspect the 2 VCT variable force solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals.
- Using the Differential Bearing Cone Installer and Handle, remove the seal(s).

18. Inspect the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals.
- Using the VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Handle, remove the seal(s).

Installation

1. NOTE: Installation of new seals is only required if damaged seals were removed.

Using the VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Installer and Handle, install new spark plug tube seals.

2. NOTE: Installation of new seals is only required if damaged seals were removed.

Using the Differential Bearing Cone Installer and Handle, install new VCT variable force solenoid seal(s).

3. NOTE: If the valve cover is not installed and the fasteners tightened within 5 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

Apply an 8 mm (0.31 in) bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the engine front cover-to-LH cylinder head joints.

4. Position the LH valve cover and new gasket on the cylinder head.
- Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

5. Attach the fuel supply tube retaining clip to the LH valve cover.

6. Connect the fuel supply tube. For additional information, refer to the quick connect procedure in Fuel System - General Information Quick Connect Coupling.

7. If necessary, install the oil level indicator tube.
- Push the oil level indicator tube into the valve cover until it clicks into place.

8. Install the oil level indicator.

9. Attach the 10 wiring harness retainers.

10. Connect the 2 LH VCT variable force solenoid electrical connectors.

11. Attach the EVAP canister purge valve tube retaining clips to the LH valve cover and the inner fender.

12. Connect the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge valve tube. For additional information, refer to the quick connect coupling procedure in Fuel System - General Information Quick Connect Coupling.

13. Install the LH ignition coils. For additional information, refer to Engine Ignition - 5.0L (4V) Service and Repair.

14. Attach the sound enhancement pipe to the inner fender.

15. Install the Air Cleaner (ACL) and ACL outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to Intake Air Distribution and Filtering Diagrams.

16. NOTE: The engine appearance cover rubber grommets may remain on the cover. If so, remove the grommets from the cover and install them on the intake manifold before installing the cover.

Install the engine appearance cover.

17. If equipped, install the strut tower cross brace and the 4 nuts.
- Tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).

18. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer Battery, Mounting and Cables Service and Repair.
