Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Pinpoint Test H: The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Does Not Enter Sensor Training Mode When Using the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) Sensor Training Procedure

Normal Operation

For the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) to enter TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) sensor training mode, the TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module) must receive valid inputs from the stoplamp switch (OFF-ON-OFF) and it must receive valid Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) input (0 km/h [0 mph]). The TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module) also monitors the ignition switch status (both OFF and RUN). Refer to Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Sensor Training Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Sensor Training for the complete sensor training procedure.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors

- Stoplamp switch state

- TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module)

PINPOINT TEST H : TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module) DOES NOT ENTER SENSOR TRAINING MODE WHEN USING THE TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) TRAINING PROCEDURE

H1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: VSM (Vehicle Security Module) Self-Test.

Are there any TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module) DTCs present?

Yes
GO to the TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module) DTC chart Tire Monitoring System.

No
GO to H2

H2 CHECK THE TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) BRAKE ON/OFF (BOO_INPUT) PID

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: VSM (Vehicle Security Module) DataLogger.

- Monitor the BOO_INPUT PID (TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) receives the brake pedal information from the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)).

- Press and release the brake pedal while monitoring the PID.

Do the brake pedal PID values match the brake pedal positions?

Yes
GO to H3.

No
REFER to Lighting and Horns to continue diagnosis of the stoplamps.

H3 CHECK THE TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) PID

- Monitor the VSS PID (TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) receives vehicle speed from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)).

Is the vehicle speed less than 5 km/h (3 mph)?

Yes
GO to H4.

No
REFER to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators continue diagnosis of the vehicle speed.

H4 CHECK FOR CORRECT TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) OPERATION

- Disconnect all the TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module) electrical connectors.

- Check the connectors for:
- corrosion.
- pushed-out pins.
- spread terminals.

- Connect all the TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module) connectors and make sure that they are seated correctly.

- Attempt to train the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) sensors again. Refer to Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Sensor Training Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Sensor Training.

Is the concern still present?

Yes
The TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) sensors may not be present. DISMOUNT the tire. REFER to Wheel and Tire Overhaul. VERIFY that the sensors are present and mounted to the wheels. If missing, INSTALL new TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) sensors.

If the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) sensors are present, INSTALL a new TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module). REFER to Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) Module - 4-Door Sedan Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Module - 4-Door Sedan or Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) Module - 5-Door Hatchback Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Module - 5-Door Hatchback.
TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
