Lack of Power/Sluggish/Spongy/Stumble

DEFINITION: Engine delivers less than expected power. Little or no increase in speed when accelerator pedal is pushed down part way.

Compare customer's car to similar unit. Verify the problem actually exists.

^ Carefully perform a visual check.

^ Remove air cleaner assembly and check for filter being clogged, or air inlet tube being restricted.

CHECK:

- Visual check of vacuum hoses for damage or loosely connected.

- Engine ignition timing.

- Loose, damaged, or defective spark plug wire(s).

- Fouled spark plugs, mechanical problems, oil consumption, etc.

- Engine overheating.

- Worn distributor terminal.

- Electronic spark advance system for proper operation.

- Vacuum leak at intake manifold.

- Slipping clutch (if equipped).

- Fuel pump pressure.

- EFI system for proper operation.

- Low cylinder compression.

- EGR valve operation.

- Brake system, dragging brakes, stuck brakes, etc.

- Accelerator cable play wrong.

- Faulty ECM.
