ADJUSTMENT
1. Start and run the engine until operating temperature is reached. Turn all electrical accessories "OFF." Connect a tachometer to the battery and the diagnostic connector.

CAUTION:
^ Do not ground the tachometer terminal. Grounding the tachometer terminal could result in damage to the igniter or the ignition coil.

^ Make certain that the tachometer is compatible with this ignition system before installation. Incompatible equipment installation could cause damage to the ignition system.

2. Check that the engine idle speed is 700 rpm. If the engine idle speed is not within specification, turn the idle speed adjusting screw until specifications have been met, (Figure 9). With the ignition switch "OFF;" connect a timing light according to the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Remove the diagnostic connector cap and insert a service wire between the diagnostic connector terminals E1 and T (Figure 6).

4. Start the engine and aim timing light at the timing mark (Figure 7). The line on the pulley will line up at the timing mark. If an adjustment is necessary, loosen the distributor mounting bolts. While observing the timing mark with the timing light, slowly rotate the distributor until the timing mark indicates the specified timing. Adjust the ignition timing to the specifications on the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label located under the hood. Tighten the distributor mounting bolts to 20 Nm (14 lb ft) and recheck the ignition timing.

5. Remove the jumper wire from the diagnostic connector and reinstall the diagnostic connector cap.

6. Disconnect the Air Control Valve (ACV) connector and recheck the ignition timing (Figure 8). The ignition timing should be 10° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC).

7. Reconnect the ACV connector. Turn the ignition switch "OFF" and remove the timing light.
