Cruise Control: Description and Operation

DESCRIPTION

This system automatically adjusts the opening of the engine throttle valve so that a selected vehicle speed can be maintained during favorable driving conditions. When system is engaged, the vehicle maintains a constant speed regardless of terrain.

OPERATION

SETTING DESIRED SPEED
Turn main switch to On position. The indicator lamp will illuminate. Depress accelerator pedal to obtain desired speed above 25 mph. Turn control switch downward toward Set (Coast), then release it. This will set the system at the speed the vehicle was moving at when the switch was released.

TEMPORARY ACCELERATION
Accelerate by depressing accelerator pedal. When accelerator pedal is released, the vehicle will automatically slow to the preset speed.

RESETTING AT A HIGHER SPEED
Turn control switch upward toward Resume (Accel). The vehicle speed will keep increasing until the control switch is released. Release control switch when desired speed is reached. On vehicles with automatic transmission, overdrive is released during acceleration and is restored when the control switch is released.

RESETTING AT LOWER SPEED
Turn control switch downward toward Set (Coast). The vehicle speed will continue decreasing until control switch is released. Release control switch at desired speed.

CANCELLING THE PRESET SPEED
Once the preset speed has been set, it may be cancelled by doing any of the following:
1. Depress brake pedal.
2. Depress clutch pedal (vehicles with manual transmission).
3. Place shift lever at Neutral position (vehicles with automatic transmission).
4. Slightly pull the parking brake lever.
5. Turn main switch to Off position.

RESUMING THE PRESET SPEED
Automatic cruising is only temporarily cancelled by steps 1 through 4 under Cancelling The Preset Speed if vehicle has not decelerated to below 25 mph. The preset speed will be resumed when the control switch is turned upward toward Resume (Accel).
