Emission Control Systems: Description and Operation
The emission control system utilizes four (4) devices or systems to reduce the harmful exhaust gases carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).The Evaporative Emission Control system (EVP) traps and stores fuel vapors from the fuel tank while the engine is stopped, then recycles them through the intake manifold once the engine is warmed up.
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system aids in reducing NOx emissions by recycling a portion of the exhaust gases into the intake manifold.
The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system returns blow-by gases from the crankcase into the intake manifold to be burned in the combustion process.
The Three Way Catalyst transforms remaining exhaust emissions into non-polluting gases.
