Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain coolant.
2. Disconnect accelerator cable from intake air duct, then accelerator cable clips from cylinder head cover and common chamber.
3. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle valve and remove PCV hose from intake duct side.
4. Remove intake air duct from throttle valve, then MAP sensor hose from MAP sensor.
5. Remove brake booster vacuum hose from brake booster, then two canister hoses from pipes on common chamber.
6. Remove two canister pipes and MAP sensor pipe from common chamber, then canister pipe support bracket.
7. Disconnect oxygen sensor harness connector, ignition coil ground cable from thermostat housing flange, coolant temperature sensor and thermo unit harness connector at thermostat housing.
8. Disconnect two ground cable terminals from right side of common chamber, then ground cable from rear RH side of common chamber.
9. Disconnect starter and alternator cable clip.
10. Remove two heater hoses from engine, then upper radiator hose.
11. Remove throttle valve heating hose from coolant bypass pipe, then coolant bypass pipe bracket from cylinder head and fuel feed pipe and return fuel hose.
12. Raise and support vehicle, then remove righthand side undercover.
13. Remove front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold, then lower vehicle.
14. Remove right side engine mount, then cylinder head center cover.
15. Remove spark plug wires from spark plugs and clips, then PCV hose from cylinder head cover.
16. Remove upper timing cover and cylinder head cover.

17. Remove timing belt, then cylinder head bolts as shown in Fig. 11.
18. Raise cylinder head and remove oil cooler pipe from oil cooler.
19. Remove cylinder head.
20. Reverse procedure to install, using tightening sequence shown in Fig. 12, torque cylinder head bolts in two steps. First to 29 ft. lbs., then to 58 ft. lbs.
