Ignition Timing Adjustment
ALDL Connector Location:
Timing Mark:
Tool Required: J 34186 Timing Light.
1. Start and run the engine until operating temperature is reached. Turn all electrical accessories off.
NOTICE: Do not ground the tachometer terminal. Grounding the tachometer could result in damage to the igniter or the ignition coil. Make certain that any tachometer used is compatible with this ignition system before installation. Incompatible equipment installation could cause damage to the ignition system.
2. Check that the engine idling speed is 700 rpm. If the engine idle speed is not within specification, turn the idle speed adjusting screw until the specification has been met. With the ignition switch "OFF," connect the pickup lead of a J 34186 timing light to the number 1 spark plug. Use a jumper lead between spark plug wire and the spark plug or use an inductive-type pickup. Do not pierce the wire or attempt to insert a probe between the spark plug and boot. Connect the timing lights power leads according to the manufacturer's instructions.
3. Connect a fused jumper wire between the two outermost terminals of the ALDL connector C-52 (located under the RH instrument panel).
4. Start the engine and aim the J 34186 timing light at the timing mark. The white notch on the crankshaft pulley should line up with the 1O° increment on the timing cover scale. If an adjustment is necessary, loosen the distributor mounting bolt. While observing the timing mark with the J 34186 timing light, slowly rotate the distributor until the timing marks indicate the specified timing. Tighten the distributor mounting bolt to 20 Nm (14 lb.ft.) and recheck the ignition timing.
5. Remove jumper wire from ALDL connector.
6. Turn the ignition switch to "OFF" and remove the J 34186 timing light.
7. Reconnect the number 1 spark plug wire, if disconnected.
