Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery and battery tray.
2. Drain transaxle fluid, then remove air cleaner assembly.
3. Disconnect wire connectors and ground cable.
4. Disconnect engine wiring harness clip, then remove ignition coil ground cable.
5. Remove battery bracket and ignition coil assembly.
6. Remove speedometer cable, clutch cable and shifter cable, then using tool No. J 28467-A or equivalent, support engine assembly.
7. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
8. Remove front undercovers, then remove ball joints at steering knuckles.
9. Remove front drive axles, then remove front exhaust pipe.
10. Remove torque rod and bracket, then left transaxle mount.
11. Remove front transaxle through bolt, then center beam with rear transaxle mount.
12. Remove engine stiffener and flywheel dust cover.
13. Using suitable jacks, support transaxle, then remove transaxle attaching bolts.
14. Remove transaxle assembly.

INSTALLATION
1. Install transaxle assembly, then torque attaching bolts to specifications.
2. Remove transaxle support, then install flywheel dust cover.
3. Install engine stiffener, then install center beam with rear transaxle mount, then install front and left transaxle mount through bolts.
4. Torque bolts to specifications.
5. Install torque rod, bracket and front exhaust pipe.
6. Install right drive axle assemblies, then install ball joints.
7. Install front undercovers, then wheel and tire assembly, then lower vehicle.
8. Remove engine support fixture.
9. Install shift cable, clutch cable and speedometer cable.
10. Install battery bracket, ignition coil assembly and ignition coil ground cable.
11. Install engine electrical harness clamp, then connect ground cable.
12. Connect electrical connectors, battery, battery tray and battery cables.
