Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 3 SOHC Engine Cylinder Head Components:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain coolant.
2. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle valve.
3. Remove breather hose from intake air duct, then the intake air duct from the throttle valve.
4. Remove MAP sensor hose from MAP sensor, then the brake booster vacuum hose.
5. Remove two canister hoses and EGR vacuum hoses from common chamber.
6. Disconnect oxygen sensor harness from oxygen sensor, ignition coil ground from thermostat housing flange and coolant temperature sensor from thermo unit harness.
7. Remove cable harness clip from bracket at coolant outlet pipe, then two cable harness connectors near lefthand strut tower.
8. Remove two heater hoses from engine and upper radiator hose from radiator.
9. Remove fuel feed hose and return hose, then raise and support vehicle.
10. Remove righthand undercover and exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold, then lower vehicle.
11. Remove right side engine mount, then the alternator and power steering belts.
12. Remove engine mounting bracket from timing cover, timing cover and timing belt.
13. Remove cylinder head center cover, cylinder head bolts, then the cylinder head.

14. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Using tightening sequence shown in Fig. 10, torque cylinder head bolts in two steps. First to 29 ft. lbs, then to 58 ft. lbs.
b. Install timing belt as described in TIMING BELT.
