Engine Removal and Installation


1. Disconnect battery cables.
2. Remove battery, battery tray and hood.
3. Drain engine coolant, then remove accelerator cable from throttle valve.
4. Remove breather hose from intake air duct, then intake air duct from throttle valve.
5. Remove air cleaner assembly.
6. Disconnect MAP sensor hose from MAP sensor, then the brake booster vacuum hose and two canister hoses from pipes of the common chamber.
7. Remove two cable harness connectors near LH shock tower.
8. Disconnect ignition coil electrical connectors, then the ignition coil and bracket as an assembly.
9. Disconnect engine harness ground cable from LH inner fender, then the chassis harness terminal from relay and fuse box.
10. Disconnect cooling fan and oxygen sensor harness connectors.
11. Disconnect ground cable terminal at rear of cylinder head cover and four connectors from automatic transaxle control system harness.
12. On models with manual transaxle, disconnect clutch cable by loosening two adjusting nuts.
13. Remove two transaxle shift cables by disconnecting cotter pin and removing clip from shift cable bracket.
14. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect transaxle shift cable by removing cotter pin, then the joint from shift cable lever.
15. On all models, remove two heater hoses from engine, speedometer cable from transaxle and upper radiator hose from radiator.
16. Remove fuel feed pipe and fuel return hose near the filter, then the coolant coolant recovery tank with bracket as an assembly.
17. Remove power steering belt, power steering pump and bracket.
18. Remove cooling fan and shroud, then raise and support vehicle.
19. Remove righthand and lefthand undercovers, then the lower radiator hose.
20. Remove two transaxle oil cooler lines from transaxle.
21. Remove two air conditioning compressor bracket bolts from engine and set aside.
22. Remove front tire and wheel assemblies, then the drive axles.
23. Remove front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold, then lower vehicle.
24. Lower vehicle and attach a suitable engine hoist to the lifting bracket, applying slight pressure.
25. Remove engine and transaxle mounts.
26. Remove engine and transaxle as an assembly.
27. Remove transaxle from engine.
28. Reverse procedure to install.
