TIMING BELT
Figures 15 through 18
Remove or Disconnect
Tool Required: J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
. Battery negative (-) cable.
2. Generator drive belt.
3. Power steering pump drive belt.
- Install a J 28467-A engine support fixture.
4. Right engine mount.
5. Four upper timing belt cover bolts.
- Raise and suitably support vehicle.
6. Right-side under cover.
7. Two lower timing belt cover bolts and cover from vehicle.
Cam Pulley Timing Mark:
- Rotate the crankshaft so the number four cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke by aligning the camshaft pulley timing mark to the "9 o'clock" position (Figure 15).
8. Crankshaft pulley center bolt from pulley.
9. Four crankshaft pulley side bolts and pulley from vehicle.
- Loosen belt tensioner retaining bolt.
10. Timing belt from around tensioner, three pulleys and belt from vehicle.
Install or Connect
Tool Required: J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
1. Timing belt to vehicle; wrap around crankshaft timing pulley, tensioner pulley, coolant pump pulley and camshaft timing pulley (Figure 16).
- Insert a hex wrench into the tensioner pulley hexagonal hole. Rotate the pulley counterclockwise to tension the belt. Hold the pulley stationary and temporarily tighten the bolt.
Timing Belt:
Adjust
- Turn the crankshaft two complete counterclockwise revolutions and align the crankshaft timing pulley mark with the mark on the oil pump (Figure 17).
- Loosen the tension pulley bolt.
- Insert a hex wrench into the tensioner pulley hexagonal hole. Rotate the pulley counterclockwise to tension the belt. Hold the pulley stationary and tighten the bolt to specification.
Tighten
- Tensioner pulley bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb.ft.).
Timing Belt:
- Move the crankshaft back to about 50 degrees BTDC and back to TDC of Number 4 cylinder. Align the crankshaft pulley timing groove with the mark on oil pump (Figure 17).
Cam Pulley Timing Mark:
Make sure that the camshaft pulley timing mark is aligned with the upper surface of the cylinder head and the dowel pin is in the up position (Figure 15).
- Measure the deflection of the timing belt as shown in Figure 18.
Timing Belt:
Figure 17 Crankshaft Timing Pulley Mark Alignment
Cam Pulley Timing Mark:
- If deflection is not 16-20 mm (0.63-0.79- inch) with 98N (221 lbs.) of pressure, readjust the timing belt. Check to insure camshaft is still in position (Figure 15).
2. Timing belt cover, secure with two lower mounting bolts.
Tighten
- Timing belt cover bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb.in.).
3. Crankshaft pulley to crankshaft dampener; secure with center bolt and four side bolts.
Tighten
- Pulley center bolt to 118 N.m (87 lb. ft.).
- Pulley side bolts to 23 N.m (17 lb. ft.).
4. Right-side under cover.
- Lower vehicle.
5. Install the four upper timing belt cover mounting bolts.
Tighten
- Timing belt cover bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb. in.).
6. Right engine mount.
7. Power steering pump drive belt.
8. Generator drive belt.
- Remove engine support fixture J 28467-A.
9. Battery negative (-) cable.
