Compressor Drive Belt Inspection

Compressor Drive Belt Alignment:

Tool Required:
J 23600-B Belt Tension Gage

1. Routine inspection of the compressor drive belt may reveal small cracks in the belt ribs. The technician must decide whether or not these cracks are serious enough to impair belt performance and thus be a basis for belt replacement. If any sections of the belt are missing, the belt should be replaced immediately.
^ Inspect the belt for proper alignment on the compressor and the crankshaft drive pulley.
2. Check the compressor drive belt tension using a J 23600-B belt tension gage. The drive belt should exhibit the following tension:
^ New belt tension should be 623 to 801 N (140 to 180 lbs.).
^ Used belt tension should be 356 to 534 N (80 to 120 lbs.).

A new belt is defined as a belt with less than five minutes engine running time. A used belt is defined as a belt which has been on a running engine for five minutes or more.
