Displaying and Reading Trouble Codes


NOTE: Before identifying diagnostic codes indicated by the "CHECK ENGINE" light, don't disconnect connectors from the ECM, battery cables, ECM ground wire harness, main fuse or 15A fuse for the tail light circuit. Such disconnection will erase the trouble code(s) in memory. When disconnecting and connecting connectors, make sure to turn ignition switch "OFF."

READING CODES:

The provision for reading trouble codes is through the check connector. Using a jumper wire, the Diagnosis switch (6) is connected to ground (5). The ECM will then toggle the "CHECK ENGINE" light to emit any trouble codes stored in the ECM. If no codes exist, the line will flash "ON" and "OFF."

If trouble code(s) exist the lowest number code will flash first. Each code will flash 3 times. If no codes exist and a driveability problem is present, refer to Diagnosis by Symptom. Testing and Inspection If codes are stored, refer to Diagnostic Charts. Testing and Inspection

The diagnostic switch terminal is located in the check connector found in the engine compartment. The diagnostic switch terminal is identified as terminal "T" (6). When terminals "T" (6) and "E" (5) are connected, a diagnosis signal is fed to the ECM which then outputs a self-diagnosis code and at the same time fixes the "ON" time of ISC solenoid valve constant.
