Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair

DISASSEMBLY
Do not disassemble outboard joint or differential side ball joint. If any malfunction is detected in these components, replace as an assembly.
1. Remove tripod joint boot band, Fig. 6
2. Remove tripod joint housing.
3. Using snap ring pliers, remove snap ring from shaft.
4. Remove tripod joint spider from shaft.
5. Remove boot band from inner driveshaft joint, then boot.
6. Release boot bands from outer boot, then remove boot.

ASSEMBLY
Throughly inspect parts for wear prior to assembly. Replace any excessively worn parts. Ensure wheel-side joint assembly and tripod joint housing are washed and air dried, and that the boots are cleaned with a cloth.
1. Apply joint grease liberally to wheel-side joint, Fig. 18.
2. Install wheel-side boot on shaft, then fill inside of boot with joint grease, approximately 80 grams.
3. Install boot bands.
4. Install transaxle-side boot clamp, then boot onto shaft.
5. Apply yellow grease liberally to transaxle-side joint.
6. Install spider joint on shaft with beveled side facing wheel-side joint.
7. Install spider joint snap ring.
8. Fill inside of transaxle-side boot with joint grease, approximately 130 grams.
9. Install spider joint housing, then boot band.
10. Check boots for distortion or dents, correct as necessary.
