Electronic Spark Control (ESC) System

Ignition And ECM Circuit- VIN 5:

Knock Sensor (KS) Sensor:

Purpose:
The Knock Sensor (KS) reduces spark knock (detonation) in the engine. This allows the engine to have a maximum spark advance for improved driveability and fuel economy.

Construction:
This ESC system has two major components:
- Knock sensor
- ESC module (part of ECM)

Operation:
When the knock sensor detects abnormal vibration (detonation) in the engine, the ESC module receives the knock sensor signal and opens the circuit in the ECM. The ECM then retards spark advance to reduce detonation.

The amount of timing retard that the ESC system applies is based on the amount of time detonation is detected and the engine speed. If detonation occurs again, the whole cycle will repeat itself.

Location:
The knock sensor is located under ithe intake manifold.
