Dash Panel Service
Fig. 131 I/P Removal:
1. Disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. On convertible models, remove inflator module from steering wheel as described in ``Passive Restraints'' section.
4. On all models, remove lower steering column trim panel.
5. Remove steering wheel as described in ``Electrical'' section of ``Metro'' section.
6. On convertible models, remove SIR coil/combination switch assembly as described in ``Passive Restraints'' section.
7. On hardtop models, remove combination switch as described in ``Electrical'' section of ``Metro'' section.
8. On all models, Remove right and left kick panels, then the right and left speaker grilles from instrument panel.
9. On convertible models, remove plastic retaining clips securing instrument panel to door jambs.
10. On all models, if equipped, remove front speakers from instrument panel.
11. Remove glove box inner panel, then disconnect A/C switch electrical connector, if equipped.
12. Remove heater control lever knobs, then the heater control unit cover plate.
13. Remove heater control unit from instrument panel.
14. On models with manual transmission, remove gearshift control lever upper boot from console.
15. On all models, remove console, ashtray and center console trim bezel.
16. Remove instrument panel center trim bezel, then the radio, if equipped.
17. Remove instrument panel cluster trim bezel, then disconnect electrical connectors from cluster trim bezel mounted switches, if equipped.
18. Disconnect retaining clip and speedometer cable at transaxle, then remove cluster assembly from instrument panel.
19. Disconnect ashtray illumination lamp, cigar lighter and cigar lighter illumination lamp bulb socket electrical connectors.
20. Remove retaining ring from rear of cigar lighter, then the cigar lighter from instrument panel.
21. On convertible models, remove two retaining screws from cluster cavity.
22. On all models, remove upper and lower instrument panel retaining screws, Fig. 131, and screw retaining instrument panel to bracket to floor pan.
23. Disconnect illumination controller electrical connector, then pull instrument panel from support member.
24. Remove screw retaining hood latch release lever, then disconnect cable from lever.
25. Disconnect wiring harnesses from instrument panel.
26. Remove instrument panel from vehicle.
27. Reverse procedure to install.
28. Reactivate airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM ARMING.
