Engine: Service and Repair




1. Release fuel system pressure as outlined under ``Fuel System Pressure Release.''
2. Disconnect and remove battery.
3. Drain cooling system, engine and transaxle oil into suitable containers.
4. Mark hood hinge position on hood, then remove hood assembly.
5. Remove two splash shields.
6. Disconnect accelerator and kickdown cables.
7. Remove radiator and engine cooling fan assembly.
8. Disconnect necessary electrical harness and vacuum hose connections.
9. Remove air cleaner hose and air cleaner upper and lower cases.
10. Remove coolant reservoir bracket.
11. Remove washer reservoir.
12. Remove cruise control actuator.
13. Disconnect heater hose from thermostat housing and coolant inlet pipe.
14. Disconnect fuel feed pipe from the fuel rail and intake manifold.
15. Disconnect fuel return hose from fuel pressure regulator.
16. On models with manual transmission, remove clutch release cylinder.
17. On all models, disconnect transaxle control cables.
18. Remove left and right scuff plates.
19. Remove shift lever knob.
20. Remove knee bolster, glove box door, instrument panel trim bezel, front and rear console and lefthand cowl side trim panel.
21. Remove radio as outlined under ``Radio, Replace'' in the ``Electrical'' section.
22. Disconnect and remove engine control module.
23. Disconnect cowl panel harness connector and pull harness from the cowl panel.
24. Remove air conditioner compressor and power steering oil pump leaving hoses attached and position in a out of the way location. Do not allow compressor or oil pump to be supported by the hoses.
25. Raise and support vehicle.
26. Disconnect front exhaust pipe, exhaust pipe support brackets and oxygen sensor.
27. Disconnect front drive axles as outlined in the ``Front Wheel Drive'' section.
28. Lower vehicle.
29. Attach an engine lifting device to the engine then disconnect engine and transaxle mounts.
30. Ensure all electrical, vacuum and fuel hoses connections are disconnected.
31. Remove engine with transaxle attached from vehicle.
32. Reverse procedure to install.
