Cylinder Head - Clean and Inspect

- Tool Required - J 34673 Straight Edge, or equivalent.

CAUTION: Do not use any sharp-edged tools to scrape carbon and old gasket material from cylinder head. Be careful not to scuff or nick the metal surfaces when cleaning. Scuffs or nicks could lead to leakage and reduced power output.

1. Clean remaining gasket material from cylinder head.
2. Clean cylinder head combustion chambers using a wire brush.
3. Using a soft brush and solvent, thoroughly clean entire cylinder head.
4. Check the combustion chambers, intake and exhaust ports, head surface and the top of the head for cracks. If any cracks are found, the cylinder head must be replaced. If cracks cannot be found but are suspected, have cylinder head magna-fluxed.
5. Inspect cylinder head distortion using a straight edge and a feeler gage. Check distortion at six locations (along all four edges and diagonally across cylinder head). If distortion exceeds the 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) limit at any location, resurface the cylinder head.
6. Inspect distortion of manifold seating faces. Check cylinder head-to-intake and exhaust manifold mating surface distortion in two diagonal directions. If distortion exceeds 0.10 mm (0.0039 inch), the cylinder head must be replaced.
