Throttle Position Sensor: Service and Repair

Remove or Disconnect

1. Negative (-) battery cable.

Throttle Position Sensor:

2. TP sensor electrical connector.

3. Two screws and TP sensor from throttle body.

Install or Connect

Tool Required: J39200 Digital Multimeter

1. TP sensor to throttle body; secure with two screws (Do not tighten fully).

Feeler Gage Installation:

ADJUST
Insert a feeler gage between the throttle stop screw and the throttle lever. On vehicles equipped with California Emissions, also disconnect the throttle opener vacuum hose from the throttle body and apply vacuum to it.

Measuring Throttle Position Sensor:

TP Sensor Resistance Specifications:

^ Using a J39200, check for continuity between the terminals of the TP sensor according to the chart in the accompanying illustration.

^ Rotate the TP sensor if necessary to adjust.

Tighten

^ TP sensor attaching screws.

TP Sensor Resistance Specifications:

^ Recheck continuity according to chart in the accompanying illustration.

2. TP sensor electrical connector and throttle opener vacuum hose to throttle body on vehicles equipped with California Emissions.

3. Negative (-) battery cable.

Tighten

^ Negative battery cable-to-negative (-) battery terminal retainer to 15 Nm (11 lb.ft.).

NOTICE: If vehicle is equipped with California Emissions, perform throttle opener adjustment below.

Adjust

^ Start and run engine until normal operating temperature is attained.

Install Tachometer:

^ Connect a tachometer to the battery and also to data link connector (DLC) terminal IG-.

Disconnecting Throttle Opener Vacuum Hose:

^ Disconnect throttle opener vacuum hose at throttle opener and plug the hose end.

^ Maintain engine speed at approximately 25OO rpm.

^ Release the throttle lever and make sure that the throttle opener is set and the engine speed is 1,300 - 1,500 rpm with the radiator fan motor OFF. Replace the throttle opener if it does not set.

^ Adjust throttle opener setting speed by turning the adjusting screw clockwise to increase engine speed and counterclockwise to decrease engine speed.

Adjusting Throttle Opener:

^ Reconnect vacuum hose to throttle opener and disconnect tachometer.
