Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Relieve fuel pressure.
2. Negative (-) battery cable.
3. Intake manifold and throttle body.
4. Exhaust manifold.
5. Timing belt and belt tensioner.
6. Distributor from cylinder head.
7. Cylinder head cover.
8. Loosen all valve lash adjusting screw locknuts and turn back screws until all valves are closed.
NOTICE: To prevent warpage of cylinder head, follow sequence shown whenever removing or installing head.
9. Ten cylinder head bolts and cylinder head with rubber seal and gasket from vehicle.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Cylinder head gasket. Install new cylinder head gasket as shown with the "TOP" mark facing up (toward cylinder head) and on crankshaft timing pulley side
2. Cylinder head; secure with ten cylinder head bolts after applying engine oil to each bolt.
Tighten
Cylinder head-to-engine blocks bolts to 73 Nm (54 lb. ft.) following sequence. Tighten a little at a time and evenly among bolts, repeat tightening sequence three or four times before reaching specified torque.
3. Rubber seal between coolant pump and cylinder head.
4. Timing belt and belt tensioner.
5. Distributor to cylinder head.
6. Throttle body and intake manifold.
7. Exhaust manifold.
8. Cylinder head cover; secure with four new seal washers and nuts.
Tighten
Nuts to 5 Nm (44 lb. in.).
9. Negative (-) battery cable.
Tighten
Battery terminal to 15 Nm (11 lb. ft.).
10. Refill engine coolant to specifications.
INSPECT
- Upon completion of installation, check coolant system for coolant leaks. After completing that inspection, start engine and check exhaust system for exhaust leaks and check engine oil pressure.
