Fuel Injector: Service and Repair

Description:

Removing Fuel Injector:

FUEL INJECTOR REPLACEMENT

CAUTION:
^ Use care when handling the injector, to prevent damage especially to the filter and the injector needle. Also, because the injector is an electrical component, it should not be immersed in any type of liquid solvent or cleaner, as damage may occur.

^ The fuel injector is serviced only as a complete assembly.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
^ Relieve fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure. [1][2]Fuel System Pressure Relief Procedure

1. One nut, one bolt, [1][2]PCV hose, Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connector and Air Cleaner (ACL) from Throttle Body Fuel Injection (TBI) unit.
2. Two bolts and air cleaner bracket from TBI unit.
3. Two screws and injector cover with electrical connector from TBI unit.
4. Fuel injector from TBI unit.

INSPECT
^ Fuel injector filter for dirt or damage. If dirt is present check for dirt in fuel pipes and fuel tank.

IMPORTANT
^ Be sure to replace the fuel injector with an identical part. Other injectors may appear to be the same, but they are calibrated differently for different flow rates.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

CAUTION: Never twist the injector while installing, as damage or misplacement of O-rings may occur.

NOTE: Apply a thin coat of oil to the new upper and lower 0-rings; install them on to the injector.

1. New lower injector insulator in injector cavity.
2. Fuel injector to TBI unit.
3. Injector cover with electrical connector to TBI unit; secure with two screws.
4. ACL bracket to TBI unit; secure with two bolts. Tighten ACL bracket bolts to 15 Nm (11 lb ft).
5. [1][2]PCV hose, IAT sensor connector and ACL to TBI unit; secure with one bolt and nut. Tighten ACL bolt to 15 Nm (11 lb ft).
6. Negative (-) battery cable. Tighten Negative (-) battery cable-to-negative (-) battery terminal retainer to 15 Nm (11 lb ft).

FUEL SYSTEM INSPECTION
^ Turn ignition switch to "ON," then back to "LOCK" to pressurize the fuel system. Check for any fuel leaks.
