Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor:
DESCRIPTION
The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor, located in the distributor, consists of a signal generator and rotor.
OPERATION
As the signal rotor turns, AC voltage is generated in the CMP sensor which varies in a pulsatory way. This pulse signal, which generates 4 pulses/revolution, is sent to the Engine Control Module (ECM) where it is used to calculate the engine speed and also as one of the factors used in determining when to energize the fuel injector.
