Data Link Connector (DLC):
DESCRIPTION
The provisions for communicating with the Engine Control Module (ECM) are a set of diagnostic terminals (TE1 and TE2) in the Data Link Connector (DLC).
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in the ECM's memory can be read by counting the number of flashes of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) with the ignition switch in the "ON" position with diagnostic request terminal "TE1" grounded.
DLC LOCATION
The DLC is located in the left rear engine compartment on the strut tower (see image).
READING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
To ground diagnostic request terminal "TE1," connect a fused jumper between DLC terminals "TE1" and "E1" and turn the ignition switch to "ON." At this point, the MIL should flash "ON" and "OFF" continuously. This would be the following flash sequence: flash, pause, flash, pause, flash, pause, etc.
If any DTCs exist, indicating a malfunction, that DTC will be flashed. If more than one DTC is stored in the ECM's memory, the DTCs will be output from the lowest to the highest. If no DTCs were flashed, the "Test Diagnostic Mode Procedure," shown below, must be initiated and performed.
TEST DIAGNOSTIC MODE PROCEDURE
In order to initiate the test diagnostic mode, the following procedure must be performed:
1. Remove the fused jumper from terminal "TE1."
2. Turn the ignition switch to "LOCK."
3. Connect a fused jumper from DLC terminals "TE2" to "E1."
4. Turn the ignition switch to "ON". At this point, the MIL should be flashing "ON" and "OFF" rapidly.
5. Start and run engine until normal operating temperature is attained.
6. Test drive the vehicle at the condition at which the original malfunction occurred.
7. With the ignition switch still in the "ON" position, connect a fused jumper from terminal "TE1" to "E1" and note any DTCs.
At this point, if any DTCs are present, they will be flashed. If no DTCs are present, the trouble does not lie within the ECM or its wiring. Refer to Diagnosis By Symptom for further intermittent DTC diagnostic procedures. Testing and Inspection
NOTICE: If DLC terminal "TE2" is grounded with the ignition switch in any position other than "LOCK", the test diagnostic mode will not function. When in the test diagnostic mode, DTC 42 will be displayed if the vehicle is not driven above 5 kph (3 mph) and DTC 43 will be displayed if the engine was not cranked. Only under these conditions should DTC 42 and DTC 43 be considered normal. Also, DTC 51 will be displayed when in the test mode if either of the following conditions are met: accelerator pedal depressed off the idle position for at least 3 seconds, the manual selector lever in the "P" or "N" position (automatic transaxle models only) or if the air conditioning is turned "ON" (if equipped). When DTC 51 is displayed under these conditions, it indicates that the previously mentioned systems are functioning normally.
