Checking Ignition Timing:

Adjusting Ignition Timing:

TOOL REQUIRED
J 34186 Timing Light

IGNITION TIMING CHECK
1. Start and run the engine until normal operating temperature has been attained.
2. Turn all electrical accessories off.
3. Open the Data Link Connector (DLC) cap. Connect a tachometer between the battery, and DLC terminal.

CAUTION:
^ Do not ground the "IG-" terminal. Grounding this terminal could result in damage to the igniter or the ignition coil.
^ Make certain that the tachometer is compatible with this ignition system before installation. Incompatible equipment installation could cause damage to the ignition system.

4. Check that idle speed is 700 +/- 50 RPM with transaxle in neutral. If idle speed is out of specifications, refer to Chart C2-A Idle Air Control Valve Check.
5. Turn the ignition switch to "LOCK" and connect the pickup lead of J 34186 to the number one spark plug. Use a jumper lead between the spark plug wire and the spark plug or use an inductive-type pickup. Do not pierce the wire or attempt to insert a probe between the spark plug wire and boot.
6. Connect the J 34186 power leads according to the manufacturer's instructions.
7. Insert a jumper wire between DLC terminals "E1" and "TE1."
8. Start the engine and aim the J 34186 at timing mark. The notch on the crankshaft pulley should line up at 10 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) on the timing indicator at each flash of the timing light.

IGNITION TIMING ADJUSTMENT
If an adjustment is required, loosen the distributor mounting bolts. While observing the timing indicator with the timing light, slowly rotate the distributor until a 10 degrees BTDC reading is obtained.

Tighten distributor mounting bolts to 20 Nm (15 lb. ft.).
