Timing Belt: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Crankshaft timing pulley.
2. Retaining clips and engine wiring harness from timing belt cover.
3. One bolt and air cleaner resonator.
4. Coolant pump pulley. See Cooling System.

5. Eight bolts, one nut and timing belt cover from vehicle. Before removing timing belt, align upper and lower timing marks by turning crankshaft.

6. Loosen tensioner bolt and stud, and remove belt from crankshaft timing belt pulley and camshaft timing belt pulley after pushing up the tensioner plate fully by finger.

CAUTION: After timing belt is removed, never turn camshaft and crankshaft independently. If turned, interference may occur among pistons and valves, and parts related to pistons and valves may be damaged.

7. Tensioner, tensioner plate, tensioner spring and spring damper. Inspect
- Timing belt for wear or cracks. Replace as necessary.
- Timing belt tensioner for smooth rotation.

INSTALLATION

1. Tensioner plate to timing belt tensioner. Insert tensioner plat lug into the timing belt tensioner hole.

2. Timing belt tensioner and tensioner plate to cylinder block; secure with one bolt and one stud. Do not tighten fully. Check to make sure that plate movement in direction of arrow cause tensioner to move in the same direction. If it does not, remove timing belt tensioner and tensioner plate and reinsert tensioner plate lug in timing plate tensioner hole.
3. Check that timing mark on camshaft timing belt pulley is aligned with V mark on inside timing belt cover. If not align the two marks by fuming the camshaft but be careful not to turn it more than its allowable turning range.
4. Check that punch mark on crankshaft timing belt pulley is aligned with arrow mark on oil pump case. If not, align the two marks by fuming crankshaft but be careful not to turn it more that its allowable turning range.

CAUTION: Perform the following steps before installing timing belt to camshaft timing belt pulley and crankshaft timing belt pulley. This will enable free rotation of camshaft and prevent damage to valves when adjusting timing belt. If camshaft does not rotate freely, timing belt cannot be properly adjusted.
a. Remove cylinder head cover.
b. Loosen all valve adjusting screws on intake and exhaust rocker arms all the way after loosening each lock nut.

5. Timing belt, tensioner spring, and spring damper. With two sets of marks aligned and tensioner plate pushed up, install timing belt free from any slack. Then install the tensioner stud only.

NOTE: When installing timing belt, match arrow mark on timing belt with rotating direction of crankshaft. Ensure that the No. 4 piston is at top dead center of compression stroke.

6. To take up slack in timing belt, turn crankshaft two rotations clockwise after installing it. After making sure that belt is free from slack, tighten timing belt tensioner stud first and tensioner bolt. Tighten
- Timing belt tensioner stud to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).
- Timing belt tensioner bolt to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
7. Confirm again that both sets of timing marks are aligned properly.

CAUTION: Before installing timing belt cover, make sure that coolant pump-to-oil pump case seals and coolant pump-to-cylinder head seals are in place.

8. Timing belt cover; secure with eight bolts and one nut. Tighten timing belt cover nut and bolts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).
9. Crankshaft timing pulley.
10. Air cleaner resonator.
