Fuel Injector: Service and Repair

Description:

Description:

The fuel injector is serviced only as a complete assembly.

Notice: Use care when handling the fuel injector in order to prevent damage to the inlet filter and the fuel injector needle assembly. Because the fuel injector is an electrical component, it should not be immersed in any type of liquid solvent or cleaner, as damage may occur.

Removal Procedure
1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Release Procedure.
2. Disconnect the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector.
3. Disconnect the [1][2]PCV hose from the Air Cleaner (ACL).
4. Disconnect the one bolt and the wing nut from the Air Cleaner (ACL) to the Throttle Body Fuel Injection (TBI) unit.
5. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) from the Throttle Body Fuel Injection (TBI) unit.
6. Remove the one bolt and the air cleaner bracket from the TBI unit.
7. Remove the two screws and the fuel injector cover electrical (with the electrical connector) from the TBI unit.
8. Remove the fuel injector from the TBI unit.

Inspect
^ Inspect the fuel injector inlet filter for dirt or damage. If dirt is present check for dirt in fuel pipes and fuel tank and repair as necessary.

Important: Replace the fuel injector with an identical part. Other fuel injectors may appear to be the same, but they are calibrated differently for different flow rates and are not interchangeable.

Installation Procedure

Caution: Never twist the fuel injector during installation to the throttle body to prevent damage or misalignment of the O-ring seals.

1. Apply a thin coat of oil to the new upper and lower O-rings and install them onto the fuel injector.
2. Install a new lower fuel injector insulator into the fuel injector cavity of the TBI unit.
3. Install the fuel injector to the TBI unit.
4. Install the fuel injector cover (with the electrical connector) to the TBI unit and secure with two screws.
5. Install the air cleaner bracket to the TBI unit and secure with two bolts. Tighten the ACL bracket bolt to 10 Nm (7.5 lb. ft.).
6. Connect the [1][2]PCV hose to the Air Cleaner (ACL).
7. Connect the IAT sensor electrical connector.
8. Install the Air Cleaner (ACL) to the TBI unit.
9. Secure the Air Cleaner (ACL) with the one bolt and the wing nut. Tighten the ACL bracket bolt to 10 Nm (7.5 lb. ft.).
10. Connect the negative (-) battery cable. Tighten the negative (-) battery cable-to-negative (-) battery terminal retainer to 5.5 Nm (4 lb. ft.).
11. Turn ON the ignition in order to pressurize the fuel system.
12. Turn OFF the ignition.
13. Check for any fuel leaks and repair as necessary.
