Cylinder Block Assembly: Description and Operation

The cylinder block is made of cast iron and has four in-line cylinders which are numbered 1 through 4 starting from the crankshaft pulley. The length of each cylinder is approximately twice the length of the piston stroke. The top of each cylinder is closed off by the cylinder head. The lower end of each cylinder bore becomes the crankcase where the crankshaft is installed. The cylinder block contains coolant jackets through which coolant flows around the cylinders, to cool the cylinder block and maintain a constant operating temperature.

The engine oil pan is mounted to the bottom of the cylinder block. The engine oil pan houses the crankcase and is made of pressed sheet steel. A lower engine reinforcement brace is mounted to the cylinder block and to the transaxle around the engine oil pan to provide extra transaxle support at the engine connection.
