Component Tests and General Diagnostics

^ Tools Required:
- J 5176 Pressure Gage
- J 35465 Gage Adapter
- Or Equivalents

1. Disconnect the pressure line from the gear housing.
2. Use pressure gage and gage adapter and connect the gage side of the pressure gage to the pressure line and the valve side to the gear housing.
3. Bleed the system, then start the engine and turn the steering wheel from the right and left stop two or three times.
4. Check that the fluid level is correct.
5. Shut off the engine and check that fluid temperature is at least 80°C (176°F).
6. Start the engine and run it at idle.
7. Check the fluid pressure reading with the valve closed. Close the pressure gage and observe the reading on the gage. If it is below 6,374 kPa (924 psi), repair or replace the power steering pump.

CAUTION: Do not keep the valve closed for more than 10 seconds. This could result in damage to the power steering system.

8. Completely open the steering gear valve.
9. Check and record the pressure reading at 1,000 RPM.
10. Check and record the pressure reading at 3,000 RPM.
11. Check that there is 490 kPa (71 psi) or less difference in pressure between the 1,000 and 3,000 RPM checks. If the difference is excessive, repair or replace the steering gear valve.
