Component Tests and General Diagnostics

LAPPING
Lapping is caused by the wearing away of the roller and race surfaces. Materials such as sand, emery, or scale can circulate through the oil and wear the bearing surfaces sufficiently to cause transaxle failure.

SPALLING
Bearing spelling is caused by overloading the transaxle of faulty assembly. Bearings that fail by spelling have either flaked or pitted rollers or races. Faulty assembly consists of misalignment, cocking of bearings, or adjustments which are too tight.

LOCKING
Bearing locking is caused by large particles of foreign material becoming wedged between the rollers and the race, usually causing one of the races to turn. Preloading of regular type taper roller bearings, higher then specified, can also cause bearing locking.
