Camshaft, Lifters and Push Rods: Adjustments
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT1. Negative (-) battery cable.
2. Cylinder head cover.
3. Set the No. 1 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC) by turning the crankshaft pulley until its groove is aligned with the O mark on the timing belt cover.
4. Check that the valve lifters on the number 1 cylinder are loose and that the valve lifters on the number 4 cylinder are tight. If not, turn the crankshaft one revolution (360 degrees) and align the mark on the crankshaft pulley as previously stated.
ADJUSTING
- Tools Required:
J 39871 Valve Clearance Adjustment Tool Set.
J 26900-1 Outside Micrometer.
1. Adjust valve lash using the valve clearance adjustment tool set. Insert the valve clearance adjustment tool set between the camshaft and the lifter adjusting shim. This action will compress the valve spring and push the lifter down. Insert the valve clearance adjustment tool between the camshaft and the lifter. Position the bottom edge of the tool on the lifter and not on the adjusting shim. (The lifter appears to be a sleeve around the adjusting shim.) This action will hold the lifter away from the camshaft.
2. Remove the valve clearance adjustment tool. The valve clearance adjustment tool should hold the lifter down, away from the camshaft.
3. Remove the adjusting shim with a small screwdriver and magnetic finger.
4. Measure the thickness of the Removed shim with a valve clearance adjustment tool.
5. Calculate the thickness of the new shim required by using the following formula:
T=Thickness of shim Removed.
A=Valve clearance measured.
N=Thickness of shim required.
For intake camshaft valves: N=T + (A - 0.20 mm [0.008 inch]).
For exhaust camshaft valves: N=T +(A - 0.25 mm [0.010 inch]).
6. Select a shim with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated value. Shims are available in 16 sizes, in increments of 0.050 mm (0.0020 inch) from 2.55 mm (0.1004 inch) to 3.30 mm (0.1299 inch).
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Any required adjusting shims.
2. Remove the valve clearance adjustment tool set from the valve lifter.
3. Recheck the valve clearance.
4. Cylinder head cover and gasket.
5. Negative (-) battery cable.
