Cylinder Block

The cylinder block is made of cast iron and has four in-line cylinders which are numbered 1 through 4 starting from the crankshaft pulley. The length of each cylinder is approximately twice the length of the piston stroke. The top of each cylinder is closed off by the cylinder head. The lower end of each cylinder bore becomes the crankcase where the crankshaft is installed. The cylinder block contains coolant jackets through which coolant flows around the cylinders, to cool the cylinder block and maintain a constant operating temperature.

The powertrain reinforcement brace is made of cast aluminum and is mounted to the bottom of the cylinder block. It runs the entire perimeter of the oil pan. It also strengthens the junction between the engine and transaxle.

The oil pan is mounted to the powertrain reinforcement brace. The oil pan houses the crankcase and is made of pressed sheet steel. There is a baffle plate located inside the oil pan. This baffle plate prevents the oil from shifting away from the oil pump suction pipe during hard turns, acceleration or stopping. The baffle also ensures that a sufficient amount of oil remains in the oil pan when the vehicle is tilted.
