Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
REMOVAL / INSTALLATIONCylinder Head/Valve Train - Part 1:
Cylinder Head/Valve Train - Part 2:
Cylinder Head/Valve Train - Part 3:
1. Disconnect negative terminal from battery.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Remove air cleaner and identify all its emission hoses.
4. Disconnect electrical wires from temperature gauge sending unit, fuel cut-off solenoid valve, automatic choke, and on cars with A/C, idle cut-off solenoid valve.
5. Disconnect fuel lines and throttle cable from carburetor
6. Identify all emission hoses going to carburetor, then disconnect them and remove carburetor.
7. Disconnect connector from distributor and remove vacuum hoses.
8. Disconnect upper radiator hose, heater inlet hose, and bypass inlet hose from cylinder head.
9. Squirt penetrating oil on nuts holding header pipe to exhaust manifold, then remove nuts and pull pipe down off studs. Remove bolts holding manifold bracket to block.
10. On cars with power steering: Unscrew pump adjustment bolt, then remove V-belt. Disconnect pump inlet hose and lubrication return hose. Plug the hoses and fittings to prevent contamination. Remove pump mounting bolt, then swing pump over to right side of engine compartment.
11. Cars without A/C: Remove the bolt holding the alternator bracket to the cylinder head, then loosen alternator adjusting bolt.
12. Cars with A/C:
- Remove compressor drive belt cover, then loosen drive belt adjusting nut. Remove compressor mounting bolts, loosen bolt in hose bracket at radiator, then lift compressor out and wire it up to front bulkhead.
Note: Compressor can be moved without discharging air conditioning system.
13. Remove compressor bracket.
14. CAL and HI ALT Only: Disconnect air jet controller hoses from carburetor.
15. Remove valve cover and timing belt upper cover.
16. Loosen timing belt pivot and adjusting bolts, then slip timing belt off cam pulley.
Note: Do not crimp or bend timing belt more than 900 or less than 25 mm (1 in.) in diameter.
17. Remove oil pump gear cover and pull oil pump shaft out of cylinder head.
18. With cylinder head T-wrench, unscrew cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown.
Note: To prevent warpage, unscrew bolts 1/3 turn each time and repeat sequence until loose.
19. Installation is reverse of removal:
- Always use new head gasket.
- Clean cylinder head surface and mating block surface.
- Align cylinder head dowel pins.
- Align timing mark on cam pulley.
Cylinder Head Installation:
- Tighten cylinder head bolts, in sequence, in two steps:
- 1st step: Tighten to 30 N.m (3.0 kgf-m, 22 lb.ft)
- 2nd step: Tighten to 60 N.m (6.0 kgf-m, 43 lb.ft)
- Rotate engine at least one full turn (counterclockwise) and check that timing marks are aligned. Loosen adjustment bolt and allow tensioner to take out any remaining belt slack. Torque adjustment and pivot bolts to 22 ftlb (30 Nm).
- Adjust valves.
