REMOVAL

CAUTION: Do not remove cylinder head until coolant temperature drops below 1OO°F.

1. Disconnect negative terminal from battery.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Remove air cleaner and identify all its emission hoses.
4. Disconnect electrical wires from temperature gauge sending unit, fuel cut-off solenoid valve, automatic choke, and on cars with A/C, idle cut-off solenoid valve.
5. Disconnect fuel lines and throttle cable from carburetor.
6. Identify all emission hoses going to carburetor, then disconnect them and remove carburetor.
7. Disconnect radio noise suppressor wire from distributor.
8. Disconnect upper radiator hose, heater inlet hose, and bypass inlet hose from cylinder head.

9. Squirt penetrating oil on nuts holding header pipe to exhaust manifold, then remove nuts and pull pipe down off studs. Remove bolts holding manifold bracket to block.

10. Cars without A/C: Remove the bolt holding the alternator bracket to the cylinder head, then loosen alternator adjusting bolt.

11. Cars with A/C: Remove compressor drive belt cover, then loosen drive belt adjusting nut. Remove compressor mounting bolts, loosen boll in hose bracket at radiator, then lift compressor out and wire it up to front bulkhead.

NOTE: Compressor can be moved without discharging air conditioning system.

12. Remove compressor bracket. (15OOcc shown; 13OOcc similar)
13. CAL and HI ALT Only: Disconnect air jet controller hoses from carburetor.

- CAL Only: Remove anti-afterburn valve and its bracket from cylinder head.

14. Disconnect tachometer cable, if so equipped.
15. Remove valve cover and timing belt upper cover.

16. Loosen timing belt pivot and adjusting bolts, then slip timing belt off cam pulley.

CAUTION: Do not crimp or bend timing belt more than 900 or less than 25mm (1 in.) in diameter.

17. Remove oil pump gear cover and pull oil pump shaft out of cylinder head.

18. With cylinder head T-wrench, unscrew cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown.

CAUTION: To prevent warpage, unscrew bolts 1/3 turn each time and repeat sequence until loose.

CYLINDER HEAD INSTALLATION

Install cylinder head in reverse order of removal:

- Always use a new head gasket.
- Cylinder head and engine block surface must be clean.
- Cylinder head dowel pins must be aligned.
- Cut-away in timing belt pulley should be at the top.
- Tighten cylinder head bolts in two steps, using the 10 mm T-wrench (07708-0010102). In the first step tighten all bolts, in sequence, to about 30 N.m (22 lb-ft); in the final step tighten, in same sequence, to 60 N.m (43 lb-ft).
