Fuel Pump: Testing and Inspection

Fuel Pump Testing

Jumper Wire:

1. Turn ignition switch OFF. Connect a jumper wire between the two Black/Yellow wires at the fuel pump cut-off relay connector.

Fuel Pressure Gauge:

2. Disconnect fuel line at carburetor and connect a fuel pressure gauge as shown.
3. Turn ignition ON until fuel pressure stabilizes, then turn OFF. Pressure should be 2-3 psi (13.8-20.6 kPa).
- If gauge shows at least 2 psi (13.8 kPa) proceed to step 4.
- If gauge shows less than 2 psi (13.8 kPa), replace pump and retest.

Fuel Volume Check:

4. Remove pressure gauge and hold a graduated cylinder under fuel hose.
5. Turn ignition ON for 60 seconds, then turn OFF. Minimum fuel volume should be 23 ounces (680 cc).
- If fuel volume is greater than 23 ounces, fuel pump and delivery system is OK.
- If fuel volume is less than 23 ounces, check for restricted fuel lines or clogged filter. If lines and filter are OK, replace fuel pump and recheck.
