Fuel Shut-off Solenoid: Testing and Inspection
1. Place clean shop towel around solenoid valve, then loosen screws and remove solenoid valve. Wipe up any spilled gasoline before testing. If cut-off valve is removed before testing, be sure to ground it.
2. Ground valve as far from carburetor as possible, then turn ignition key on while observing valve needle. Test solenoids several times to ensure there is not an intermittent failure.
3. If needle retracts, proceed to step 7.
4. If needle does not retract, check voltage from control unit.
5. If there is voltage, replace solenoid valve and repeat test.
6. If there is no voltage, check wiring.
7. Install solenoid valve.
8. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
9. Raise and support front of vehicle, block rear wheels and apply parking brake.
10. Place shift or selector lever in second or 2 position and accelerate, then suddenly release throttle and check for voltage during deceleration above 15 mph. There should be no voltage.
