3 Speed Automatic Transaxle

Fig. 5 Typical throttle control cable installation:

1. Disconnect ground cable from battery and transaxle.
2. release steering lock and place gear selector lever at N.
3. Disconnect positive battery cable from starter motor and black/white wire from solenoid.
4. Disconnect cooling lines from transaxle, plug open ports and secure lines aside.
5. Remove starter mounting bolts, starter motor and 3 upper transaxle retaining bolts.
6. Raise and support vehicle and remove front wheels.
7. Drain transaxle, then reinstall drain plug and washer.
8. Loosen locknut B securing throttle control cable, Fig. 5, disconnect cable from bracket and throttle control lever, and secure cable aside.
9. Remove clip securing speedometer cable and pull cable from housing. Do not remove cable holder, as drive gear may fall into transmission housing.
10. Remove splash shields from right and left wheelwells and front end of the frame.
11. Remove exhaust header pipe.
12. Position suitable jack under right lower ball joint, then remove nut securing ball joint and tie rod end to steering knuckle. Ensure jack is positioned securely under lower ball joint to prevent control arm from moving suddenly when joint is disconnected.
13. Disconnect tie rod and ball joint from steering knuckle using a suitable puller, then gradually lower jack to release spring tension. Repeat steps 12 and 13 on left side steering knuckle.
14. Rotate right steering knuckle to farthest outboard position, pry right inner constant velocity joint approximately 1/2 inch out of transaxle to release spring retainer, then pull stub axle out of transaxle. Do not pull driveshaft out of transaxle without first releasing spring retainer, as constant velocity joints will be damaged.
15. Attach a suitable lifting device to 8 mm bolt on engine near distributor, then raise engine just enough to take weight off mounts and secure position.
16. Position suitable jack securely under transaxle, then remove bolts from front transaxle mount.
17. Remove 3 bolts securing engine torque bracket to transmission housing.
18. Remove bolts securing rear transmission mount to torque converter housing.
19. Remove torque converter cover plate and bolts securing torque converter to drive plate (flywheel).
20. Remove cotter pin securing shift cable pin and pin, disconnect cable from transaxle, and retain shift cable housing.
21. Remove remaining bolts securing transaxle to engine.
22. Separate transaxle from engine, pry left inner constant velocity joint approximately 1/2 inch out of transaxle to release spring retainer, then disconnect driveshaft while lowering transaxle from vehicle.
23. Reverse procedure to install.
