SYMPTOM
When the engine is cold, the car will not move in "D" but does move when "R" or "2" is selected.
CAUSE
The one-way clutch slips.
AFFECTED TRANSMISSIONS
1984: AW1050705 - on
1985: AW1500001 - AW1524970

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the original one-way clutch with H/C 0898403. The parking gear (H/C 0971671) and the countershaft low gear (H/C 0888131) must also be replaced because they may be damaged. Follow the procedure on the back of this page.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Raise the car on a hoist.
2. Remove the right front wheel.
3. Remove the undercarriage cover so you can get to the transmission end cover.
4. Remove the dipstick.
5. Drain the transmission fluid.
6. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
7. Remove the transmission mount from the transmission.
8. Lower the transmission so you can get to the end cover bolts.
9. Remove the end cover.
10. Remove the low clutch assembly, but leave the collar on the mainshaft.
11. Remove the parking gear, the one-way clutch and the countershaft low gear as an assembly.
12. Lubricate the new parts with ATF (one-way clutch, parking gear, and the countershaft low gear).
13. Reassemble all of the parts in reverse procedure. Use an impact wrench calibrated to 9.5 kg-m (70 ft.lbs) on the mainshaft and countershaft locknuts. (The mainshaft locknut is LH threaded.) We recommend the use of an impact wrench because the mainshaft holder cannot be installed with the transmission in the vehicle. Calibrate your impact wrench on a wheel lug nut set at 9.5 kg-m (70 ft.lbs.).
CAUTION: Do not use any type of sealant on the gasket surfaces.
14. Stake the locknuts.
